Winkler Elementary School - History
At a meeting at Anthony Bohner's home in December 1847, the residents of the Town of Burlington School District No. 7 decided to build a frame school on land that Christopher Winkler donated on the southeast corner of his farm on McHenry Road (County Trunk P). Following orders from the county superintendent of schools, the district built a new brick school in 1908. The red brick school is still standing on the corner of McHenry St. (County P) and Fish Hatchery Road. Winkler became part of the Burlington High School district in 1960. The Burlington Area School District became a K-12 district in 1966.
In 1998, the Burlington Area School District bought 10 acres for building a new Winkler elementary school. The new Winkler Elementary School cost $2.8 million to build in 1998. The more spacious 26,000-square-foot school opened in 1999 featuring a bigger gym, library, and cafeteria. The bell from the old school (which was missing for nearly 30 years) is on display in front of Winkler.
