BASD School Safety
The Burlington Area School District prioritizes school safety. School safety encompasses preventing and responding to a variety of situations that could happen within a school.
Prevention
- All BASD schools have secure entrances meaning all doors are locked and guests must enter through the main office.
- All offices use the Raptor system to run a background check on guests entering the building
- All staff and volunteers must pass a background check before beginning work.
- Vehicles follow specific patterns to minimize potential accidents.
- All schools run drills to prepare for weather emergencies or evacuations due to, for example, smoke, fire, or a gas leak.
- All schools practice lockdown protocol (lock & hold = students stay in the classroom and continue with their work or a lock, hold & secure = there may be a more threatening situation).
Active Situations
A lockdown is often the best response to ensure safety in a range of situations from one student needing medical attention to a building-wide incident. An unannounced lockdown can produce anxiety in staff and students. It is important to remain calm and follow instructions.
BASD works with local law enforcement to ensure safety. Each school has a safety plan, which includes directions for reunification if schools needed to evacuate to a location off-site.
Training
Pupil Services, Buildings & Grounds and police department have collaborated to train school leaders, staff, and students on how to respond in a variety of situations, including "Run, Hide, Fight" if there were a violent situation. Parents and guardians can view the training for different age groups on the right (grades K-1, grades 2-5, middle school, and high school).
