GUIDELINES FOR COURSE SELECTION
(These are suggestions from the BHS Counselors)
- Look at the Google document titled with "Last Name, First Name, Junior Action Plan" from your Junior Planning conference, transcript, and course descriptions before selecting each class. When reading course descriptions, pay close attention to prerequisites for previous courses taken, specific grades earned, and/or student grade levels.
- Use a pencil when filling out the Course Request Worksheet.
- Read and use pages 3-5 of the Course Planning Guide (Graduation Requirements, Four-year guide & Most Post-secondary Colleges and Universities). Make sure that your course selections meet your graduation requirements and your post-secondary plans.
- English - Talk to your current English teacher about your classes for next year. Make sure to select enough English courses to meet the four-credit graduation requirement. Read the course descriptions and choose the classes that are best for you. Note: Most four-year colleges prefer literature and/or composition based courses for admission purposes. If you are requesting English Electives (NOT AP), please request an alternate English elective in the alternate course box.
- Math – Talk to your current Math teacher about the options for next year. Your Math teacher will verify your choice after all course selections have been made.
- Electives – Choose courses that best fit your career goals and interests, and read all course descriptions and requirements.
- Computer Skills: This is only for students who have not taken or passed the Freshman Connections course. Transfer students should speak with their counselor about this requirement. Students will not be able to choose this class on Xello and submit. Please circle the class and make a note on the back of your blue sheet.
- Financial Literacy (if not completed): Read the course description for all four options, and choose the one that is best for you.
- Alternate Course Requests – Choose courses that you would enjoy taking, and read all course descriptions. You must choose three CREDITS (not classes) in Career Cruising.
- Athletes - Make sure that your couse selections are classes approved by the NAIA and NCAA if you are planning on pursuing the college athlete pathway.
- Please note if you are interested in taking any Start College Now and Early College Credit courses on the back of your blue sheet. This includes the CNA and EMT classes.
REMEMBER: ALL COURSES LISTED ON YOUR BLUE COURSE REQUEST WORKSHEET ARE COURSES YOU MAY BE GIVEN, SO CHOOSE WISELY.
Even if you wish to take specific courses (e.g. PE 10-11 and/or Personal Finance) during summer school, you must still select them in your course requests for the following year.
