Snack Time and Lunch
I encourage everyone to have a good breakfast every morning and to bring a quick, nutritious snack to eat in the afternoon since we have an early lunch this year. These snacks are good "pick-me-ups" for your second grader. If your child takes breakfast at school in the morning, he or she could save an item from the bag for snack time if you prefer. There is often more in the bag than they can eat at one time.
***Parents can check their child's food service account in Skyward to make payment. Breakfast is free to all students. A daily ticket is $2.45 for elementary students who take lunch occasionally. A weekly ticket is $12.25. If your child wants to purchase milk to have with their cold lunch, the cost is 30 cents per day.
Absences
If your child is out for a day or two due to illness, work can be made up when your child returns to school. In the event that your child is absent for a longer period of time, arrangements can be made for work to be sent home with a sibling or picked up from the school office. I will make every attempt to accommodate your request, but I will need some time to gather things together, so calling or emailing in advance is appreciated. If your child misses several days, I do not expect all the work to be finished right away. Just keep plugging away each night and turn in papers as they are completed. I understand that while your child is ill, homework cannot be done.
Early Pick-up or Changes in Routine
Please send a dated, signed note to the school if:
* Your child needs to be dismissed early.
* Your child has your permission to go home with a friend.
* Your child typically is a bus rider, but will not be riding the bus on any given day, or vice versa.
* Someone other than Mom or Dad is picking up your child--change in pick-up routine.
* Your child isn't going to aftercare, but normally does or vice versa.
Children without parental permission to modify their dismissal plan will be expected to follow their normal routine.
Supplies
Please ask your child about his or her school supplies. They get a lot of use and can run out or get lost before you know it! The beginning of the year also brings about lots of erasing, so erasers wear out quickly. The pencils your child brought to Open House are shared with the class, and I encourage the children to take good care of the supplies, so they last.
Backpacks
Please check your child's backpack every night. Your second grader will most likely have homework every day. It is your child's responsibility to empty his/her mailbox at the end of each day to take papers home. Our math program has homework sheets that review the day's lesson, there will be spelling words to study on a five-day cycle, and books to read. I will encourage the children to put their papers into their home folders to help prevent papers from getting crumpled, torn, or lost on their journey home. Second graders often forget to empty their backpacks on their own, so emptying them out together as a daily routine will provide a perfect opportunity to discuss what they have learned that day while teaching responsibility. I know that there can be a lot of papers coming home at one time, but please sort through them carefully before disposing of items because homework and important notes can get mixed into the pile.
